An Honest Comparison

Helloskin vs Naturium

Naturium's "Azelaic Topical Acid 10%" is a lovely, gentle serum with niacinamide and vitamin C — but here's the detail the name hides: it isn't azelaic acid. Its active is Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, an azelaic derivative (Naturium now even calls it an "Azelaic Acid Derivative Complex"). It's milder and more elegant, but it's a different, weaker molecule. We run the real acid, at a true 20%. Here's the breakdown — no spin, just chemistry.

The Science

Azelaic acid, or an azelaic salt?

Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate (PAD) is azelaic acid bonded to glycine into a water-soluble salt. It's elegant and gentle — but it's a different molecule, used at its own low levels, and it can't be read as "10% azelaic acid." If you want the actual, evidence-backed acid, it has to say Azelaic Acid on the label.

Naturium
PAD

a derivative, not the acid

The active is Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate — a gentle, water-soluble azelaic salt — with niacinamide and vitamin C. Lovely for sensitive skin, but it is not true azelaic acid, and the "10%" refers to the derivative blend, not 10% azelaic.

Helloskin
20%

the real acid

A true 20% azelaic acid — the molecule with the actual research behind it for tone, texture and blemishes — with 10% Niacinamide and a salicylic-acid assist.

Credit where it's due: derivatives like PAD are genuinely gentler and more elegant, and Naturium's vitamin C is a real bonus we don't include. But if your goal is azelaic acid's actual benefits, a derivative at unstated strength isn't the same thing.

Naturium's serum is well-made and gentle, with a nice vitamin C. But its hero is a derivative, not azelaic acid — so if it's azelaic's real benefits you're after, ours is the true 20% acid.

The Benchmark

Prescription-strength azelaic, without the prescription.

Dermatologists prescribe azelaic acid at 15–20% (Skinoren is 20%, Finacea 15%). Most over-the-counter serums stop at 10% — half. We run a full, true 20%, on the shelf, no script.

Strength
20%

True azelaic acid — the prescription ceiling

The same 20% concentration a dermatologist prescribes as Skinoren, in a cosmetic serum you can just buy — paired with 10% Niacinamide and a salicylic-acid (BHA) assist.

Form
0grit

Dissolved, not suspended or "derivative"

Real azelaic acid, carried in a light Undecane/Tridecane serum base that spreads clean — not a gritty silicone suspension, and not a milder Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate stand-in.

Azelaic acid is dose-dependent and a higher percentage is stronger — it can also be more active on sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, so patch-test and build up slowly. Not medical advice; azelaic acid at these levels is a cosmetic ingredient here, not a substitute for prescribed treatment.

Helloskin wins 10, ties 3, cedes 2. Naturium genuinely wins on gentleness and including a vitamin C — real credit. On being actual azelaic acid, at strength, we win.

Helloskin wins 10 of 15
Naturium's serum is gentle, elegant and includes a vitamin C we don't — genuine wins. But its "azelaic" is Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, a derivative, at a strength that isn't comparable to real azelaic. We're the true 20% acid, with niacinamide and a BHA.

Being Fair

What Naturium gets right.

A fair amount. Naturium's serum is genuinely well-made: a gentle, water-soluble azelaic derivative that rarely stings, plus niacinamide and a stabilised vitamin C (ethyl ascorbic acid) that we don't include, and coffee-seed antioxidants — at around $30. For sensitive or reactive skin that can't tolerate strong azelaic, a derivative like this is a smart, comfortable choice.

Where we differ is honesty about the molecule. Naturium's active is Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate — an azelaic derivative — not azelaic acid, and the "10%" is the derivative blend, not 10% azelaic. Derivatives are gentler but milder, and the real research is on the acid itself. We use a true 20% azelaic acid, with 10% Niacinamide and a salicylic-acid assist. If you want gentle, theirs is lovely; if you want actual azelaic acid, ours is the real thing.

Common Questions

What people actually ask.

Is Naturium's serum azelaic acid?
Not exactly. Its active is Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate — an azelaic derivative (an azelaic-glycine salt) — which Naturium now labels an "Azelaic Acid Derivative Complex." It's gentler, but it's a different, milder molecule than azelaic acid. Ours is the real 20% acid.
Is a derivative worse than real azelaic?
Not worse — different. Derivatives like PAD are more water-soluble, more elegant and gentler, which suits sensitive skin. But they're milder, used at low levels, and the bulk of azelaic's evidence is on the acid itself. For maximum effect, the real acid wins; for comfort, the derivative can.
Naturium has vitamin C and we don't — does that matter?
It's a genuine point for them — ethyl ascorbic acid is a nice brightening antioxidant we don't include. We answer with Ferulic Acid + Vitamin E, plus a true 20% azelaic and a BHA. Different toolkits; ours is built around the real acid.
Which should I choose?
Sensitive skin that wants gentle brightening with a vitamin C? Naturium's derivative serum is lovely. Want actual azelaic acid at full strength with niacinamide and a BHA? Helloskin's true 20% at $39.99.
