🧪 An honest comparison — a gritty 10% suspension, or a dissolved 20% serum
An Honest Comparison

Helloskin vs The Ordinary

The Ordinary's Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% is the serum everyone starts with — and at under $20 it's a genuine bargain. But it's exactly 10% (half our dose), it's a silicone suspension — undissolved azelaic particles in a dimethicone base that can grit and pill under makeup — and there's no niacinamide behind it. We run a true, dissolved 20% azelaic with 10% Niacinamide and a salicylic-acid assist. Here's the breakdown — no spin, just chemistry.

The Science

A suspension, or a solution?

Azelaic acid barely dissolves in water, so brands have two honest choices: dissolve it properly, or suspend the raw particles. The Ordinary suspends 10% in a silicone base — which is why it can feel gritty and pill under makeup or sunscreen. We dissolve a full 20% into a light Undecane/Tridecane serum that spreads clean.

The Ordinary
10%

suspended in silicone

Isodecyl Neopentanoate and Dimethicone carry undissolved azelaic particles (azelaic sits 4th, with Polysilicone-11). It works, but the base is why users report grit, white cast and pilling — and it's only 10%, with no other actives.

Helloskin
20%

true, dissolved

A full 20% azelaic acid dissolved into a light serum base, with 10% Niacinamide, a salicylic-acid assist and antioxidant protection — prescription-level strength that still layers cleanly.

Credit where it's due: The Ordinary's suspension is cheap and effective, and some people never mind the texture. But half the dose, in a base that grits, with nothing else in it, is a starter — not the strongest option on the shelf.

The Ordinary gives you 10% azelaic and Vitamin E for under $20 — real value. But we give you double the azelaic, dissolved not suspended, plus Niacinamide and a BHA, for $39.99. More active, better delivered.

The Benchmark

Prescription-strength azelaic, without the prescription.

Dermatologists prescribe azelaic acid at 15–20% (Skinoren is 20%, Finacea 15%). Most over-the-counter serums stop at 10% — half. We run a full, true 20%, on the shelf, no script.

Strength
20%

True azelaic acid — the prescription ceiling

The same 20% concentration a dermatologist prescribes as Skinoren, in a cosmetic serum you can just buy — paired with 10% Niacinamide and a salicylic-acid (BHA) assist.

Form
0grit

Dissolved, not suspended or "derivative"

Real azelaic acid, carried in a light Undecane/Tridecane serum base that spreads clean — not a gritty silicone suspension, and not a milder Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate stand-in.

Azelaic acid is dose-dependent and a higher percentage is stronger — it can also be more active on sensitive or rosacea-prone skin, so patch-test and build up slowly. Not medical advice; azelaic acid at these levels is a cosmetic ingredient here, not a substitute for prescribed treatment.

Helloskin wins 12 of 15
The Ordinary is the cheapest way into azelaic and it's fragrance-free — two real wins. But it's a 10% silicone suspension with no niacinamide, no BHA and a texture that can grit and pill. We deliver a dissolved, true 20% with 10% Niacinamide and a BHA for $39.99.

Every ingredient. Both labels, side by side.

The Ordinary's base is silicone-led (Isodecyl Neopentanoate, Dimethicone, Polysilicone-11) — which is what suspends the azelaic and what can grit. Vitamin E is the only extra active.

Being Fair

What The Ordinary gets right.

Genuinely a lot for the money. At $19.40 for 30ml, The Ordinary's Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% is the cheapest credible way into azelaic, it's fragrance-free (better for the most reactive skin), and the 10% dose is a sensible starting strength. For a first-ever azelaic, on a budget, it's a fair pick.

Where we pull ahead is dose, delivery and everything else. Theirs is 10% suspended in a silicone base that many users find grits, casts white or pills under makeup; ours is a true 20% dissolved into a light serum. Theirs is azelaic and Vitamin E and nothing more; ours adds 10% Niacinamide, a salicylic-acid assist and Ferulic Acid. Double the azelaic, better delivered, in a fuller formula — for $39.99. The one thing to weigh: our serum contains fragrance, so the most sensitive skin may prefer theirs.

Common Questions

What people actually ask.

Is 20% azelaic better than The Ordinary's 10%?
For most goals, yes — azelaic is dose-dependent and 20% is the strength dermatologists prescribe, versus The Ordinary's 10%. But higher is also more active, so if your skin is very reactive, a 10% (or a fragrance-free option like theirs) can be the smarter starting point. Patch-test and build up.
What does 'suspension' mean, and why does it matter?
Azelaic acid barely dissolves, so The Ordinary suspends the raw particles in a silicone base rather than dissolving them. That's why some users report grit, a white cast, or pilling under makeup and sunscreen. Ours is dissolved into a light serum, so it spreads clean.
The Ordinary is much cheaper — why pay more?
It is cheaper, and honestly so. For $39.99 you get double the azelaic (a true 20%), dissolved not suspended, plus 10% Niacinamide, a BHA and antioxidants — a complete serum rather than a single 10% active.
Which should I choose?
On the tightest budget, or with very reactive skin that wants fragrance-free, The Ordinary at $19.40 is a fair start. For the strongest true-azelaic result in one elegant serum — 20% + Niacinamide + BHA — Helloskin at $39.99.
